Cabin fever – Upgrade to Premium
Many of us will have experienced a flight where the seat isn’t very roomy, the food served leaves a lot to be desired .This can be an ordeal, particularly when flying long haul, and especially when it’s a business trip.
Way back in the day there were only ever 2 options for flying; economy or first class, that is until a new cabin concept was pioneered in 1991 by Eva Air-Premium Economy. Richard Branson quickly jumped on board with the idea in 1992 but it wasn’t until the new millennium in 2000 that British Airways followed suit.
In recent years more and more airlines have also added this cabin option when realising what a high demand there was for it. So sitting between Business Class and Economy, what is it that Premium Economy offers travellers, particularly business travellers that makes it so attractive?
Cost
All companies are looking to cut costs, especially on air travel, but appreciate the need for employees to be able to work if required on flights. This isn’t possible in economy cabins due to the close seating and space available. Business class can be too expensive for many companies making premium cabins the ideal choice. Premium travellers will also benefit from food and drinks being included in the ticket price and a choice of menus. This removes the hefty on board expenses bill a business traveller may have claimed from his company.
Comfort
Bigger seat pitches and more legroom allows travellers to work on a laptop easily without invading other passenger space. Seat pitches will vary on airlines offering premium cabins, and while a few inches may not sound like much, when you’re in that seat for 6+ hours it does matter!
Outside of your seat there is generally more room to walk about in as the aisles tend to be wider than those in economy and less risk of whacking your head on the underside of low-slung baggage compartments. Premium flyers also have the privilege of getting to leave the plane first upon landing, making the checking out process slightly quicker.
Premium also offers other factors that may vary amongst airlines such as power outlets, Wi-Fi, amenity bag, in-flight entertainment, type of TV screen and level of service. Most airlines offering Premium Economy will provide priority boarding and baggage reclaim, dedicated toilet, pre-departure drink and post dinner liqueur.
Increased luggage allowance
This is a big bonus for business travellers, especially as many airlines now allow premium travellers 2 pieces of hand luggage and removing the problem of taking files and a laptop in the cabin with you.
Whilst Premium Economy isn’t Business Class it does offer the business traveller an affordable and comfortable alternative that will make their flight more enjoyable and upmarket.
